OnSketches of Lunar Craters and other features
.........................................................................................................................................
This is a sketch I made for an astronomy course, part of which was to measure lunar mountains, the North and South peaks marked here North of Crater Prinz are the ones I used for the excersise. The South Peaks are the Harbinger Mts. ..................................................................................................................................................

This shot was taken just before the sketch of Ptolomaeus and co was made, I used a 20mm EP giving a 50X mag and then hand held the digital camera to the EP, exposure was about 250th sec at F2, I then adjusted the channels in photoshop and removed the blue channel, this allowed the difference in colours to stand out. Near the centre, on the terminator, you can clearly see the three craters in the drawing below.
A little better than the previous sketch, though the central crater, Alphonsus, I think should be a little larger. The small Rill and "Birds footprint" Features to the west of Ptolomaeus were real, the footprint being shadow from some small hills I think. South is up.
The area to the East (right on the drawing) of Maurolycos, the larger crater, seems to be the remains of a previous and older crater. North west of the small Crater marked A, there is also a small crater on the rim of Maurolycos, but it did not show in the EP, hence it is missing from the sketch. This is my first, reasonably good sketch of a lunar feature made at the scope. |
