The
County of Pembrokeshire
The county of Pembrokeshire is at the extreme Southwestern tip of Wales, well known throughout the UK and indeed many other places too, for it's spectacular coastline and scenic countryside. It is one of the most geologically varied counties in the whole of the UK and indeed even much of Europe, so much so that many geology students from the UK and European Universities visit the county as part of their study course. This variation of geology is what makes the county's coast and mainland areas so interesting from both a scenic viewpoint as well as a scientific one.
In the summer, the coast is ablaze with colour as Thrift and White Sea Campions as well as Bluebells and Common Campions all flower simultaneously. Off the coast to the West are four islands, all of which are important National Nature Reserves; Ramsey Island to the North is owned by the RSPB, Grassholm is also RSPB owned and a large Gannet colony is resident there. Skokholm and Skomer Islands are managed by the Wild Life Trust with resident wardens for most of the year, both Islands are open to the public but Skokholm is not a daily access, Skomer is throughout the summer weather providing, the boat for both islands leaves from Martins Haven, Marloes. Ramsey Island is also very worthwhile visiting and during the summer season boats leave twice daily or more from St Justinians.
Inland, the Preseli Mountains
provide a stunning contrast to the coastal regions, large tracts of upland
heather moor top the well rounded peaks of these most ancient of mountains,
and on a clear day the view from the top of either of the two main peaks
is well worth the climb, plus the smaller of the two is very easily accessible
from the main road with parking about two thirds of the way up. |
